The floats of the Carnival of Viareggio involve the synchronized and simultaneous motion of several animated masks. An approach to the study of their motion based on mechanism kinematics theory has the potential to be an extremely useful tool for float designers. From one hand, it enables the development of more efficient solutions to obtain the desired motion. On the other hand, it can simplify the tasks of the operators who manually move the masks through ropes and tendons. This contribution shows an example of this concept: the kinematic analysis of a mask motion is discussed and some mechanisms that meet kinematics requirements are proposed.

The computational approach to performance art redefines the concept of theatrical sciences. From the analysis of dramatic through Artificial Intelligence methods, for stage spatialization and interpretation, to the translation of the internal processes of actors into sequences of actions programmed as they were robots, traditional artistic processing processes adopt a common language with science and find, in the use of new technologies, virtualization and biofeedback systems, a powerful impetus for the development of performing arts and theatrical pedagogy. 3D sounds and projections, the manipulation of stage helements, holograms, and new forms of dramaturgy enable infinite possibilities of settings and scene effects.

Virtual Environments as a new frontier for drama and acting

Virtual Reality is nowadays becoming more and more widespread because of their unprecedented and unique features, enabling the interaction with an immersive digital environment. In the talk opportunities offered by such technologies to the specific case of acting will be presented, showcasing a series of case studies at worldwide level and analysing the experiences carried out at the Perceptual Laboratory of Scuola Sant’Anna in Pisa.

“Presence” is a fundamental concept in drama and in digital performance. Actors do express it not only through acting, sounds too “create” presence. Sonic drama will be analyzed as composed of four chapters: sound anatomy, sound visualization, scene compositing and the role of the audience.
